People of Scottish descent who settled in the province of Ulster in Northern Ireland during the 17th century, and their descendants who later immigrated to North America, were known as "Scots-Irish" (or Scotch-Irish). This group, predominantly Presbyterian, migrated to the American colonies primarily between the 18th and 19th centuries due to economic opportunity and religious and political reasons. Today, the term is used to describe both the ethnic group in Ireland and their descendants in places like the United States and Canada.
